Are your MLM Leads worth the .csv file they came in?

If you just want a list of people that sometime, one day, kinda, sorta, might have been interested in a business opportunity – just call me, I’ll be happy to give you a list. But is this a useful list? Maybe.

There are so many junk mlm leads being peddled online today, it makes me sick. Every week I see a new site offering 10,000 leads for $100 or something to that effect. The question you need to ask yourself is this:

“What is the real value of these so-called leads?”

If the list owner could get $1 per lead for them or could monetize that list by selling something to them, why aren’t they doing just that? Why would they be selling the leads to you at just pennies a lead? Be wary of purchasing any leads online, especially from unknown sources, because you never know what you’re going to end up with. The may very well be worth less than the disk space that they are taking up on your computer.

When I first got started in MLM I had very little training with regard to leads and I thought that the lead company I was talking to was legitimate. I bought a list of 4,000 “health leads” for $800, which were supposedly all people that had requested information about health products or interested in health.

As it turns out, I would have done just as well calling names from my local phone book, since I was just cold-calling those leads anyway…and probably 1 out of 10 people in the phone book (with the right approach) would be interested in their health. Needless to say I look back at that as a learning experience not to spend that much money on an untested lead source.

It may sound like I’m suggesting that you never buy leads, that’s not the case. What I am saying is be careful who you are buying leads from and what price you are paying. If you’re going to cold call leads, in my opinion, until you get good at it, it’s best to practice on aged leads 30-90 day old leads from a company like Cutting Edge Media, Responsive Data, or Peak Impact. I’ve used all 3 of these companies over the years, and they all provide decent leads.

But there is also an even better solution than that.

Learn a skill.

If you learn how to generate your own leads online for your business, you will then have to power to control your own future. You will never be held at the mercy of another company, upline, or lead generation company.

There are so many different ways online today that you can generate your own leads. There are free advertising methods, pay per click, social media advertising, on and on and on. The real question you need to ask yourself is: “Am I willing to learn and take action on what is necessary to learn to generate my own mlm leads?”

If you are, then it’s time to start on that journey. Learn, grow, and succeed.

    Great article Joel,
You definitely get much higher quality leads when you learn to generate your own. You also made a good point as to why a business owner would want to sell their good leads.
